A SHARED HEART FOR OUR CITY

We win
the future.

At Rise, we believe the next generation is worth investing in. We want children to know Jesus, discover their gifts, and grow into the people He is calling them to be.

Started by leaders and families of Rise, 8th Street Academy carries that heart into the classroom. The school is a separate organization, founded through Rise Up Education, with a shared commitment to the Gospel and the flourishing of our city.

FAITH. LEARNING. CHARACTER. COMMUNITY.

Growing the whole child.

The Academy’s four values shape how students learn, relate to others, and approach the world.
01

Rooted in God

Helping students build their identity on their relationship with God.
02

Tools for Life

Growing curious minds through strong academics, discovery, and perseverance.
03

Relational Depth

Learning to build friendships with empathy, compassion, and grace.
04

Character to Thrive

Developing confidence and resilience to meet challenges with hope.
A STEP OF FAITH IN 2021

A school.
A calling.
A new beginning.

Dave and Sherry Grey, who helped found Rise in 2014, felt called to invest in the next generation through education. In 2021, they established Rise Up Education and purchased the former Phonics Phactory school building in Gresham.

Teachers and team members came together to open 8th Street Academy that fall. What began with young learners has grown into a school serving early education, elementary, and middle school students.

The building already had a history of Christian education. Built in 2004, the former Phonics Phactory school had a Bible placed in its foundation. When the Greys purchased it in June 2021, opening a new school by September was an ambitious step of faith.

They began connecting with people who shared their passion for students and had experience in education. Monica Barham helped develop and direct the early education program, bringing valuable experience from Phonics Phactory.

In just a few months, teachers and team members came together, and the school opened that fall with eight teachers and 130 students. Beginning during the pandemic brought challenges, but the team remained committed to giving children a place to learn, find stability, and grow.

During the second school year, Troy Wagner joined as Director of Rise Up Education, bringing experience in private school administration. The Academy continued to grow and expand into the elementary and middle school years.

Through each new chapter, the heart has remained the same: helping children know Jesus, become grounded in Scripture, and discover their calling. It is a story of people responding to God’s invitation to invest in the next generation, right here in Gresham.
